Thursday was a no-reading day for a school trip. ### Three steps, then Monday 1. **Set up the class.** Sign in with a passkey, give the class a label such as Room 4, the term dates and the number of readers. Readers are seat numbers with nicknames you choose, never names. 2. **Send the slips home.** Print 8 slips to a page. Each has a QR code and a family code. A family scans it, and their phone opens their child's page for that visit. 3. **Families tick, you read the grid.** One tap for tonight, minutes and a book title if they like. On Monday the grid shows every night, who read 3 or more, and each reader's streak and total. ### Made for one teacher and one class - No parent accountsFamilies never sign up, never give an email address and never see another child. A visit ends when the page is closed, so a shared phone never shows the last child. - Gentle streaksWeekends can be skipped, and no-reading days for trips and holidays neither break nor add to a streak. The words never tell anyone a streak was lost. - Paper still worksA family without a phone takes home a monthly paper log, and you tick their nights in from the grid. A record of nights your family marked as reading. It is not an assessment. What is kept and for how long is on the [privacy page](https://readingtick.com/privacy/). The [FAQ](https://readingtick.com/faq/) covers lost slips, holidays and families without a phone. Every part of it is free to use. --- # How the reading log, slips and streaks work, Readingtick URL: https://readingtick.com/how-it-works/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-28 > How a class is set up, what the slip's two codes do, which nights a family can tick, and how streaks, totals and milestones are counted. ## How the reading log works A teacher sets up a class and prints a slip for each reader. Families tick the nights their child read; the teacher reads one grid. Every rule below is the one the server applies, in the order you meet it. Last updated 28 October 2026 ### The rules, in the order you meet them 1. **The teacher signs in with a passkey.** Your phone or computer makes it with your fingerprint, face or screen lock. There is no password and no email address to give. A recovery code, shown once, adds a new passkey if every device is lost. Up to 10 passkeys. 2. **A class.** A label such as Room 4, the class's time zone, the term dates (at most 140 days) and the number of readers, up to 40. Each reader is a seat number and a nickname, Reader 7 until you change it. A nickname is one word, or a word and one initial, such as Maya R: a first name or initials, never a surname. 3. **The slips.** Each slip has a QR code, a class code of 26 characters and a family code of 10. A family code works only together with its class code. One connection that types 10 wrong codes waits an hour; the class itself is held only after 300 wrong codes in an hour from everywhere together, so one family's typos never stop the others. The class page shows the count. The family codes are shown once, when they are made; a lost slip is replaced with a new one, and the old one stops at once. 4. **The family page.** Scanning the QR opens the child's page for that visit; closing the page, or 30 minutes with no tap, ends it, so a shared phone never shows the last child. On the family's own phone, “Keep me signed in on this phone” keeps it open for 120 days from the last use, with a Sign out here link. After the term's last day, its last nights can still be ticked for 6 more days. The page shows one nickname, the last 7 nights, the streak and the total. A family never sees another child or the class grid, and never gives a name or an email address. 5. **Which nights can be ticked.** Every date is a calendar date in the class's time zone. Read tonight means today there; before 04:00 it means last night. A family can tick or untick today and the 6 nights before it, never a night that has not happened and never outside the term. The teacher can tick any night of the term up to today, for families who use the paper log. 6. **One row a night.** A second tap on the same night changes that night; it never counts twice. One night can be changed 20 times by a family; after that, the teacher changes it. 7. **Skipped nights.** No-reading days, and Saturday and Sunday when the class counts school nights only, neither break a streak nor extend it. A tick on a skipped night still adds to the total. 8. **The streak.** Nights in a row that are not skipped and are ticked, counted back from today if tonight is ticked, otherwise from yesterday. So a streak never drops during the evening before the family has ticked. 9. **The total and milestones.** The total is the ticked nights in the term. Milestones are 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 and 100 nights. 10. **The grid.** Rows of nicknames, Monday to Sunday, the streak and the term total, and a line such as 19 of 27 read 3 or more nights. It checks for new ticks every 30 seconds while it is open and in view. 11. **Terms.** Starting a new term ends the current one the day before. A term's ticks are kept 400 days after it ends; a notice comes first, and they are removed 7 days after it. Term dates must be within 1 year before and 2 years after the day they are typed. Between terms the family page says no reading term is open, and nothing is taken. 12. **When saving is paused.** The site runs on a free hosting allowance with daily limits. When it is used up a tick is answered with Saving is paused for now; the family's phone keeps the tick and sends it once, later, when saving works again. ### Worked example The week starting Monday 2 November 2026, in a class that counts every night: - Ticks on 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 November. On the 7th the streak is 2 (the 6th and 7th; the 5th was missed). On the 8th, before anyone ticks, it is still 2. On the 9th, with nothing on the 8th, it is 0, and the copy says Ready for the next night. - The same class with 4 November set as a no-reading day, and ticks on 2, 3 and 5 November: on the 5th the streak is 3 and the total is 3. - A class that counts school nights only, with ticks on Thursday 5, Friday 6 and Monday 9 November: on Tuesday the 10th, before ticking, the streak is 3. The weekend is skipped. - A tick made at 00:30 on 4 November goes to 3 November unless the family picks another night. - A term that ends on 18 December 2026 refuses a tick for 19 December. ### What it is not - A record of nights your family marked as reading. It is not an assessment. It never measures reading level, progress or ability. - Not a messaging app: families get no email and no messages, and the teacher's only email is an optional Monday summary. - Not a school system: one teacher runs one class, under the school's own rules on pupil data. - Readingtick is not affiliated with any school, publisher, reading scheme, library or reading-record app. --- # Questions about the class reading log, Readingtick URL: https://readingtick.com/faq/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-28 > Answers about Readingtick: parent accounts, what identifies a child, streaks, holidays, missed nights, families without a phone, terms and lost slips. ## Questions about the reading log Families, children's data, streaks and terms, answered plainly. The rules themselves are on [how it works](https://readingtick.com/how-it-works/). ### Frequently asked questions **Do parents need an account or email?** No. A family scans the QR code on their child's slip, or types the two codes printed on it, and their phone opens the child's page. There is nothing to sign up for and no email address to give. By default the page is open for that visit only: closing it, or 30 minutes with no tap, ends it, so the next family on a shared phone sees the code box. On their own phone a family can tick Keep me signed in on this phone, which keeps it open for 120 days from the last use. **What identifies a child?** Only a seat number and a nickname you choose, such as Reader 7 or Maya R. A nickname is one word, or a word and one initial; the site refuses two-word names and asks for a first name or nickname, though it cannot catch every form of a full name. It has no field for a name, birth date, address, school or photo. Book titles refuse email addresses, web addresses and phone numbers. **Can parents see other children?** No. A family's page shows one nickname, that child's last 7 nights, streak and total. The class grid is only on the teacher's signed-in page. **How does the streak work?** A streak is the nights in a row with a tick, counted back from tonight if tonight is ticked, otherwise from last night, so it never drops during the evening. Skipped nights neither break it nor add to it. The words are gentle: 3 nights in a row, or Ready for the next night. **What about weekends and holidays?** Choose school nights only for the class and Saturday and Sunday are skipped for streaks. Add no-reading days for trips, holidays and test weeks, up to 60 in a term. A tick on a skipped night still counts in the total. **Can a parent tick a missed night?** Yes, for today and the 6 nights before it: tap the night on the page. Older nights are added by the teacher from the grid. Nights that have not happened yet cannot be ticked. **What if a family has no phone?** Print the monthly paper log for that reader: a box for every night of the month. When it comes back, tap their nights in the grid; they show as ticked by you. **Does Readingtick test reading level?** No. It is a record of nights a family marked as reading. It is not an assessment and never measures reading level, progress or ability. **How long is reading kept?** Ticks are kept 400 days after the term ends; a notice on your classes page comes 7 days before they are removed, so you can download them first. Nicknames go when their class is deleted or holds no term any more. Deleting a class or your account removes everything in it after 7 days. **How do I start a new term?** On the class page, Start a new term with its label and dates. The current term ends the day before the new one starts. The readers and their slips carry on into the new term. **Can I export the grid?** Yes. Each term downloads as a CSV file from the class page, and the account page downloads everything you own as one file. **What if a slip is lost?** Make a new slip for that reader on the class page and print it. The old slip stops at once, the ticks stay, and the family page shows the date the new slip was made. Family codes are shown only when they are made, so a slip is never printed twice with the same code. **What is a passkey, and what if I lose my phone?** A passkey is a sign in your phone or computer makes instead of a password, kept behind your fingerprint, face or screen lock. Add a second device on the account page, or use the recovery code you saved at sign up to add a new passkey. **What does Saving is paused for now mean?** The site runs within a free hosting allowance with daily limits. When it is used up, a tick waits on the family's phone and is sent once, later, when saving works again. Nothing has to be tapped twice. **Can I add it to my phone's home screen?** Yes. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. On other browsers use Install in the menu. **Is Readingtick part of my school's systems?** Readingtick is not affiliated with any school, publisher, reading scheme, library or reading-record app. You run it for your own class, and the school's rules on pupil data are yours to follow. --- # About the class reading log, Readingtick URL: https://readingtick.com/about/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-28 > What Readingtick is: a home reading record families tick on their phone and one teacher reads as a grid, built to know as little about children as it can. ## About Readingtick A home reading record for one class: families tick the nights their child read, and the teacher reads one grid on Monday. ### Why it exists Most primary classes send a paper reading record home. It comes back torn, signed in a hurry on the bus, or not at all, and on Monday morning someone flicks through a stack of booklets to see who read. School-wide reading apps solve this for a whole school, with a contract and an app every parent has to install. Readingtick is for the single teacher who wants the same picture for one class, tonight, without either. ### How it works for a family A family gets a printed slip with a QR code. They scan it and their phone opens their child's page for that visit: one big button for tonight, the minutes and the book if they like, and the last 7 nights as dots. They never sign up, never give an email address, and never see another child. A family without a phone takes home a monthly paper log instead. ### How it is built The pages are static files. A small server keeps the classes, readers and ticks in one database on Cloudflare. The teacher signs in with a passkey, so the site never holds a password. Readers are a seat number and a nickname, never a name, and the server refuses two-word names (it cannot catch every form of a full name), an email address, a web address or a phone number where it does not belong. Family codes are kept only in a scrambled form, so a copy of the database would not open a single child's page. ### What it is not A record of nights your family marked as reading. It is not an assessment. It does not measure reading level, progress or ability, and it does not message families. It is not run by or for any school system: the teacher uses it for their own class and follows their school's rules on pupil data. Readingtick is not affiliated with any school, publisher, reading scheme, library or reading-record app. ### Install it On a phone it can sit on your home screen like an app. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. On other browsers, use Install in the menu. ### Contact Questions and problem reports go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com. Ticks are deleted 400 days after the term ends. It holds no parent contact data at all. Last updated 28 October 2026 ### Where it is kept Everything the server keeps is in one Cloudflare D1 database that belongs to this site. Cloudflare chooses where the database lives; the region is not pinned, so it may be outside your country. The pages themselves are static files served by Cloudflare Pages. ### What is stored about a reader - A seat number from 1 to 40 and a nickname of up to 16 characters. A nickname is one word, or a word and one initial: a first name, a nickname or initials, never a surname. The server refuses two words, two capitalised names run together and more than 2 Chinese or Korean characters, but it cannot catch every form of a full name: a hyphenated name passes (Mary-Jane is a first name, so Maya-Rossi passes too), and so does a full name run together in lower case. The teacher chooses. - For each night ticked: the date, whether it was read, the minutes and the book title if the family gave them, whether the family or the teacher ticked it last, when the family first ticked it, how many times it was changed, and a random key for the last tap so a repeated tap is not counted twice. - A scrambled form (SHA-256) of the reader's family code and a number that changes when a new slip is made. The code itself is printed on the slip and not kept. - Whether the reader is in the class or has left. There is no field for a child's name, birth date, address, school, photo, or any family's name, email address or phone number. Book titles refuse email addresses, web addresses and phone numbers. Class and term labels refuse words that ask for a child's name, surname, birth date, address, postcode or school, also when they are spaced out or written with look-alike letters. ### What is stored about a class - Its label, time zone, streak rule, whether the Monday email is on, and when it was made and changed. - Each term's label, dates, no-reading days and the date its ticks will be deleted. - A scrambled form (SHA-256) of the class code printed on every slip, plus a sealed copy that only this server can open with its own secret key, so the teacher can print slips again. ### What is stored for a teacher - A random account id, the account name chosen for the passkey manager (or Readingtick owner), and when the account was made. - For each passkey: its public key, its id, a signature counter, the name given to it and when it was added and last used. Never a fingerprint, a face or any biometric data: those stay on the device. - A scrambled form (SHA-256) of the recovery code. The code itself is shown once and not kept. - For each signed in device: a scrambled form of its session id, and when it was made, last used and when it expires (90 days after the last use). - An email address, only if the teacher adds one, used only for the teacher's own confirmation link and Monday summaries, never to sign in. It is the one place an email address is ever stored. Until it is confirmed, only a scrambled form of the confirmation link is kept with it. - Monday summaries (the week's line and the nicknames with no night ticked) with whether each was emailed, and a record of each email sent. ### What is stored for a family Nothing on the server. On the family's own phone: one cookie that keeps that child's page open for the visit (which reader, the slip's number and when it runs out, signed by the server so it cannot be changed). By default it is gone when the browser closes, and stops working after 30 minutes with no tap. With “Keep me signed in on this phone” ticked (it is off unless the family ticks it) it lasts 120 days from the last use, and a new slip from the teacher still ends it. Also taps waiting to send, kept in the browser's local storage under keys beginning with `readinglog` until the server confirms them. The codes leave the address bar as soon as the page opens. ### Limits on how fast requests come To stop codes being guessed and requests flooding the site, the server counts some requests per network address, per class and per teacher in hourly buckets. An address is stored only as a keyed scramble that cannot be turned back into the address, and each bucket is deleted after 2 hours. Addresses are never written to logs. ### How long it is kept - Ticks: 400 days after the term ends. Before they go, a notice on the classes page (and by email when there is a confirmed address) says so, and they are deleted 7 days after it. A term changed in the last 60 days is never deleted, whatever date was typed. A night left outside every term by a change of dates stays stored and uncounted until the dates cover it again; it goes only with its class or account. - A reader who left: their nickname is deleted 7 days after they left once their ticks are gone. - A class whose terms have all been deleted is deleted too, with 7 days to restore it. - A deleted class, or a deleted account and everything in it: 7 days, while it can be restored, then deleted for good. - Sessions: until 90 days after the last visit on that device, or until sign out. Passkey sign in requests: 5 minutes. Rate limit buckets: 2 hours. Email records: 30 days. Monday summaries: 90 days. ### How to download and delete it On the account page, Download everything gives one file with every class, term, reader and tick, with no codes in it. Delete my account removes everything after the 7 days above; single classes can be deleted on their page, and a reader can be marked as left. Requests by email go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com. ### Cookies Two kinds, both kept from page scripts and never sent to another site: the teacher's session cookie, and the family's cookie for their child's page described above. ### Page counts Visits may be counted by Cloudflare's own page counter, which sets no cookie and records that a page was opened, never what was typed. There is no other analytics. ### Payments No paid plan is offered at present; if one is added, this page will describe it. ### Email Only the teacher can receive email, only at an address they added and confirmed. Families are never emailed; there is no address for them. Emails carry no tracking images. ### Pupil data and the school A teacher uses Readingtick for their own class and follows their school's rules on pupil data. Last updated 28 October 2026 ### What this is Readingtick keeps a home reading log for a class: a teacher sets up the class and prints a slip for each reader, and families tick the nights their child read. It is a record of nights a family marked as reading. It is not an assessment, and it does not measure reading level, progress or ability. ### Pupil data and your school By setting up a class you confirm that you follow your school's rules on pupil data and on contact with families, and that you have any permission those rules ask for. Use seat numbers and nicknames, never a child's name; the site refuses two-word names, though it cannot catch every form of a full name, and has no field for a child's birth date, address, school or photo. School data rules are yours to follow: nothing on this site is legal advice. ### Names used Schools, reading schemes and passkey managers are named descriptively, if at all. Readingtick is not affiliated with any school, publisher, reading scheme, library or reading-record app. ### Payments No paid plan is offered at present; if one is added, this page will describe it. ### Your content You own your class's record. You decide who gets a slip, and you can make a new slip for any reader, which stops the old one at once. You can download everything you own and delete your account at any time from the account page; the privacy page says exactly what is stored and for how long. ### Acceptable use Use the reading log for your own class. Do not put a child's or a family's private details into a label, nickname or book title, do not try to guess codes, and do not send requests at a rate that degrades the site for other people. Classes that break these terms may be removed. ### Warranty and liability The site is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind, and runs within free hosting limits that can make it busy for a while. To the extent the law allows, Readingtick is not liable for any loss arising from its use, including a tick that was not saved or a slip that reached someone it was not meant for. ### Contact Questions and problem reports go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com.
